Now i know hat you ppl with think about these sorts of things but i was looking through ebay the other day and found this website:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1531325245
me and my friend REALLY want a data projector, but can't afford to throw away a couple of grand on one of those fancy projectors. SO i'm tempted to give something like this a try.
I did some research, here are some links u might be interested in...

i always look at those and feel tempted.. i mean, the guy has plenty of positive feedback (cant ALL be faked surely) and the pics of him with the projected film... i just cant see how the f00k it werks... lens off TV, then a mirror to the wall behind the TV?
hell he even has a decent webpage
http://www.100inchbigscreentv.com/
go on, get one off him, then tell me wot its like :pacman:
I wouldn't expect great quality from this thing. Ever seen the things in the back of buses that the driver uses to magnify things when he's reversing? That's exactly what's being used here.
The Fresnel lens was created by Augustin Fresnel for lighthouses. Search google and read about it.
IMHO the image of the guy standing in front of the picture has been doctored slightly.

I posted this earlier, just thought i'd post it again pointing out it has all ya need to know what the deal is:
http://www.bstvcentral.b0x.com/
basically u build a box with another samll focus box, the fresnel lens is at one end of the focus box. You plonk the box infront of your TV, then hopefuly it will project a big image on ur wall. only problem is it will be upside down :( So you can get a mirror to fix that or turn ur Tv / monitor upside down. :hmm:
and left to right? surely..
donkeyhumper
23-04-2002, 01:32
well if you rotate it 180deg. then that's upside-down and sorts out the left to right no?
i now own one :D
will tell u about it when i get it

have you ever actually made one?
or do you sell them, in which case i won't ask cos u'll blatently say they r0x0r ;)
donkey said he made one and it was... well... cack. :kill:
i have made a few of the for other people
for a price (friends) lol
they do really work, basically it depends on your design of the box and its good. because you have the cinema screen in your home. :cylon:
i'll take a look at your plans... does it work better with a little or big TV?
donkeyhumper
28-05-2002, 14:29
ok ppl
If you want a fresnel lens, then you can apparently buy them in boots for like £1. I bought mine for £5 over ebay delivered straight to ma door, look for fresnel lens on ebay.
I got plans with my lens but this website helps too: http://bstvcentral.b0x.com/
I have a really good screen (a shiny/reflective projector screen used for projecting slides back in the 70's) and a bright trinitron monitor. My box was reasonably well built - spent about 10-12 hours on it. I painted the inside of my box black to improve the brightness. Basically it worked but not aswell as some are claiming. It was fun to watch music videos on the big screen but all in all it's not THAT fantastic. We watched Toy Story 2 on it because that was one of the better films we tested - simple bright colours. Disney films work ok then :P
The image was really dull but i think it works better with a TV because they give off more light. Either way it's maybe worth a go just to quell curiosity about them :D however certainly don't expect something that you will use time and time again.
I hope this helps, if you have any questions please post here and i will try and answer them very quickly.

oops I just noticed they were the same plans as GeNiE, oh well :D
donkeyhumper
28-05-2002, 14:36
also i bought mine off http://www.matco.org.uk/
however is GeNiE is selling them too (and you can't find them in Boots (UK Chemist / Pharmacy)) he's probably a better bet becuase he's a lovely techangelererererer
does that make any sence?
got any piccies of ur box / the picture?

should do in late summer tho....
donkeyhumper
28-05-2002, 14:46
also our fantastic box is called CAMPOBOX - one of the boxes we used for some reason has that on it so we show it with pride.......umm yes.
i see you have done some research donkey, well it depends how you make the thing like i said above. you can create it in all diffrent shapes (have some tallent in u) but i prefer rectangle because it is more stable for positioning.
:o use a tv for 100% good visibility from the tv so you can see the damn thing (picture) :o :P
donkey well it really depends on the frensel lens size and thickness, i have tryed few other lenses, few of the work and some dont. recomended one to use is the flat sheet 0.4mm thick
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

damn right :paw::crash:
hey :)
i just read all your posts, pretty interesting..
Ive been using ebay for like a few weeks and i see the projector thingo's being advertised like once a week, and each time i do see one i get that feeling "arrgh should i buy one or not"
So thats why im posting this,
should i buy one?
has anyone got any shots of what the quality does come out like?
and,
is the turn the screen upside down thing really true? because stuff that. You could get a mirror to flip it or such.
I noticed a couple here have brought the kit thingo off ebay, you know how they have those nice screenshots on the auction pages, is the quality like that? or is that just a actual projection screen?
anyway,
i suppose it would be pretty fun to make,
just if it's going to be shitty i won't buy it..
My main use of it would be just playing divx's i suppose or trying to watch tv with it.
Thanks,
Alex

okay doke,
i bought one of this dude on ebay, i built what i thought was a good and pretty sturdy box (took about 4 of us 10 hours to make in total!). The main problem we had was the picture was so dark - if using a TV the image is much better but a computer monitor is really not great. We had a good projector screen and a really great trinitron monitor and yet it was still a little too dark to be watchable.
Yes you have to turn your tv/monitor upside down and then your picture will be back to front, to make it perfect you'd need a mirror to convert that too but in most cases you wouldn't notice that.
i wouldn't recommend buying a lens off ebay - try find a good thick lens made of glass in a different shop - might work better.my mate is having success with a slide viewer - using two lenses to flip the picture back. He's gonna try it using the box we made.
umm anyway i reckon it only really works for TV (as they give out more light) and not computer monitors so ur divx may be out :(
p.s. it worked well with music videos but the only film we watched with it was toy story 2 because it uses simple bright colours
oh i see,
my mate has a program to change the colours on the computer
so they are like HELL bright,
maybe i should give this a run.
the gay thing about this place,
they only operate in america and not australia!
uhm,
i so won't be turning my tv/monitor upside down, prolly just get mirrors or such.
It's a pretty good idea,
ive got the wall to do it and all and the time to build the box, my dad and his dad are pretty good at wood work, so id give them a job for the weekend :D
Does anyone know where to get the lens in australia?
would be cool if somebody did.
it's kinda stupid if you have to turn your monitor or tv upside down, and risky!
did you try a mirror? did it work ok?
and, last but not least,
honestly,
if you were in my position
would you buy one?
oh and
did anyone get any pics of theirs in action?
thanks!!
Alex

i have this program adobe gamma - which makes the screen look brighter but doesn't really work - the problem is the amount of light actually leaving the box and that doesn't work. I can't really imagine that software would really rectify the darkness problem
try this: make a dark room, turn on your tv - see how it lights up your room
turn off the TV and try it with the monitor, i'd imagine ou wont see it as bright! Basically it's probably not as healthy to stare at a screen giving off that much light as close as you are to a monitor (i might be talking poop)
no pictures ofmy box, mine was made of cardboard.
If i was in ur position i'd probably just not bother. It depends if you want to do it just to settle you're intrigue or you actually want to have a projector you can use every day. You probably wont be able to get the latter for $10
oh yeah and the mirror thing wasn't amazing
//dh
mm.
yea i probably will give it a shot.
just need to find a bugger who is in australia that sells them and that accept direct bank deposit :o
oh well
thanks for your help!
Alex

SCORED!
im gonna order in a minute so they post it tomorrow!
i will prolly write a journal on how it went after i build and try it out. :P
:)
ok cool,
arrived today,
ive done everything so far, i just sprayed it black with spray paint and it's sitting in my shed drying off.. Than ill resume tomorrow morning.. :borg:
my main concearn is flipping the tv ova (that doesn't excite me) ill prolly just do it on computer monitor, bit more safer hey? and ive got music vids.. and games might not be that bad..
or just when playing music , use those graphic things.. that look cool fullscreen..
anyway,
has anyone took a pic of their's in action yet or anything? id be interested to see!! So you say movies and tv is generally shit ?
cartoons and music vids are the way to go?
games are really cartoons, so maybe they might be cool?
anyway
peace. :crash:
donkeyhumper
19-07-2002, 13:46
games are absolutely awful!!! especially if ya wanna play them - coz you need to see what is actually going on all the time :)
my tv wont flip without the colours messing up - u can degauss ur monitor (u can't easily degauss ur tv)
good luck with whatever happens
i dunno who the questions about pictures are ainmed at but I can't help ya because I don't use my box (it's too much hassle turning ma monitor upside down - and it's at my mates) and also i don't have a camera.
ok cool.
all set up.
i have one problem
(i was using fast and furious as my test)
the only main problem i had was:
that i couldn't see people's faces that well.. i might try get a better quality lens and see if that helps:)

I saw those kits all over ebay today. I figured it was too good to be true, though in theory it would work. I guess the image doens't come out very clear or bright.
Have any of you tried it with a TV, not a monitor? I would think a TV is much brighter.
donkeyhumper
23-07-2002, 18:56
yeah TV is a bit better - but I haven't seen a TV you cna tunr upside down without it messing up - u'd need to use an elaborate setup of mirrors or get something to degauss ur TV.
i think
screens will generally screw up if u put them upside down, as demonstrated when we did it all the time at school.
i cant think of a quick easy way to invert the image... i might try and make a more complex device with some more lenses in there to invert and focus the picture... i have one of the fresnel lenses but havent tried to do anything yet.

Do you guys know where I can get the lenses without getting ripped off on eBay? I found a place to buy some 7x10" ones at www.3dlens.com. They are 3x mag. and under $1.70 each depending on how many you buy. I'm wondering if they're real crap though. Plus shipping is from somewhere like China so it's $7.
donkeyhumper
25-07-2002, 14:01
dunno where you're from but you could try boots the chemists if you're in the UK or you could try looking in some optical store or just any big pharmacy.
i have no idea... in fact why am i posting? :D

Saw you guys talking about the projection tv projects and some problems you were having.Heard someone say use a thicker lense.Dont use a thicker lense itll only take out more light. Also for you people that dont wanna turn the tv upside down you can usually put it on its back facing the ceiling. Then you add onto your box and put a mirror at a 45 degree angle so it goes onto a wall. Its not an elaborate mirror setup its just one at a 45 degree angle, and itll flip the picture around and baem it onto a wall.Just figured id be helpful, please no questions though as im sure ill never be back here again

I was thinking of buying a kit but will i see large pixels in the projection?
donkeyhumper
14-08-2002, 16:12
hehe, well if you sat far enough back you wouldn't notice them anyway but unfortunately the picture will be far too blury for you to worry about that. Count yourself lucky if you get a watchable picture.

Well, If i get it to werk ok, i will be making and selling in retail packaged kits including lense and plans.

hehe, good luck
I actually did buy the 100" TV projector plan, if anyone wants it, i can send it, for a small fee of course, lol, i did not read the entire topic, cuz there is a lot of pages. So somebody might have posted something like this already.
i bought one too, never tried making it...
in short, dh tried and it sucked
donkeyhumper
27-11-2002, 18:13
yeah but it was kinda fun making it - like an adventure without the adventure bit, nice bit o' teamwork. but yeah alas was ultimately dissapointing and we spent far too long on it :S
hrmm.. if anyone of you still trying this thing.. its works decently.. i got it projected onto the back of a poster on my ceiling and its watchable (aka i watched the uti release of two towers...)
Steps:
1 get a damn fresnel lens. get a rigid one.. i got a full sheet one made by apollo..( $7 usd) dont buy a flexible one they dont work.
2 get/build a box the size your your tv screen... mine is about a foot and a half tall. for a 13 in screen.
3. get/build (your probaboly gonna have to build this one a box that fits INSIDE the first one snugly mines probably a foot and a half or so.. make it bigger and cut down to length.. or you wont be able to focus.
4 paint it all black.. paint outside black too so it looks nicer if ya want.. (dont do white or silver or tinfoil shit.. it reflects and you get ghosting)
5 mount the lens.. some places say to cut a hole in the box the 5th ringin or so.. i just cut a rectangle in the friggin box about 1/2 smaller on each side and mounted the lens on foam cuase it was kinda curvy aka. dont bend the lens. also be sure to center the lens.. not by the sides but by the smaller cricle (rigided side faces tv)
6 or something i lost count.. find the biggest FULL ring and go about a 1/2"-1" in and measure form there to the middle. Cut out a circle the same size (black construction paper) and tape it on. i find bigger hole works better. but since your using paper and not the cardboard box ou can experiment with different sizes.. sometimes the lens is distorted around the edges so you have to go farther in.
7 duct tape first larger box onto tv..
8 shove smaller box into larger box.. if you didnt measure right it really sucks at this point
9 aim at what ever and focus..

certainly i think this was one of my major problems! mine is a piece of poop! If i had a good lense it might have given good results...

been bored and read this whole thread.. yes very bored and with out sleep for quite a while.. Sky rocket Plug...buy sky rocket 100 mg of caffiene per ounce aka drink 6 bottles and die.. i bet you wont get to the 3 one.. anyways:
1 thickerlens fine as long as lens is still high quality.. and if you have a floppy one this is
2 the ones from 3dlens or the cruddy paper magnifiers the lens bends all outt shape and plus the cruddy ones seem to scratch really easily..
3 tv on its back should be fine.. most 13 inchers wont mind.. just keep it off for 24 hours b4 flipping it (short technical explination for this but im not gonna put it here)aim it at the ceiling then attach a mirror at 45 degress to aim it at the wall.. my whole set up is about 2 1/2 feet tall (not counting mirror)
