Hi,

Just like to say I found www.techangel.co.uk when I was lookin for some info on networking. I'm new here so Hi to everyone :).

The article was helpful but what I would like to know is if I networked two PCs with a couple of NICs and a crossover cable and then at a later date hooked one of the PCs up with ADSL, would I be able to access the ADSL conection from the other PC?

Thanks for any help.

hi,

and welcome to the site and forums.

Assuming you are using windows, if you have anything later than windows 98 second edition (SE) then you should be able to use internet connection sharing which basically allows the computer which is directly connected to the internet (via the ADSL modem thingy) to umm share the connection with other computers on the network.

A similar principle applies if you are using linux.

I hope that helps.

like donkey said, windows connection sharing means the computer directly connected to the adsl becomes a "gateway", through which the other computer can access the internet.

i have it running (on windows XP) in my house right now :)

If you are using Linux it should be reasonably simple to set one box up as a gateway. I have never done this from scratch as I use a firewall which does it all for me. I seriously suggest you consider using some sort of firewall if you get ADSL. Something like Norton or Zone alarm will do in Windows although I am not a great advocate of these solutions. If it's Linux you are using then I can get you more info but somehow I doubt you are :(

Norton Internet Security (windows) comes complete with a firewall, privacy protector, ad blocker, and Norton AntiVirus

a good package

Thanks for all the help :D

The PC that will be getting ADSL is running Windows XP. The other PC is running Windows XP and Windows Me (Would this be a problem?). As for the Firewall issue I had thought that it might be a good idea to get one one.

Again thanks for the help.

easy peasy! XP has a funky "network setup wizard" that does net sharing for you, and even makes a setup disk (or u can use the XP cd) for use on the Win ME computer

:D

god bless microsoft... :o

One of the PCs has WinXP the other has WinXP and WinME, Dual-Boot.

Does anyone know where on the net I can get crossover cables, I found some but they were black, I want white ones really.

black r00lz!

if u have 3 PCs tho, u cant use crossover... u will need a hub and 3 normal cables, or if u wanna be clever one PC can have 2 net cards and u can bridge between 2 networks each using crossover cables...

hub + normal cables would be better tho...

u can get crossovers just about anywhere btw, go to PCWorld or summat

yeah like mr-unhelpfull-pl0w said u can get cables from just about anywhere.

I have just won an auction on ebay from some guy for 30mtrs of normal ethernet (geek speak: RJ45/Cat5e - i think RJ45 is the type of clip (plug)) cable. It cost me £14.50 including recorded delivery. I haven't got it yet - it came today but I wasn't here so i gotta visit the post office and collect it :( But when i get it i'll let you know if it's any good because the prices are super. I'm sure the guy will be able to do crossover cables too.

But if ya can't wait here's a link to dabs.com:

http://www.dabs.com/products/prod-search.asp?action=search&stab=ref&ob=manufacturer&cs=Home

tho i don't recommend them for just a cable

PC world or a local sho will stock it and will be cheaper / less hassle anyway.

lol - l33t techangel.co.uk cat5 cable

i saw 100 plugs either on a shop's website or on ebay or summin sometime. Do you need some special "crimping" device to make the cable?

Renko
