Can you help?
My mate Paul (@work) has just put together this great machine but has used 3 fans as it is in a rack mounted case (pictures soon!) This makes the machine so bloody noisy that it sounds like a vacuum cleaner! We need it quiet as it is to be used in a public auditorium running the sound for theatre productions. Any clues to a very very quiet fan?? help!
papst fans, i think, are quiet
check on that tho
thanks much useful info on their website, including a decibel level selector!

Vantec Stealth fans, or mod the fans so they only draw 7v instead of 12v (it really works)
it sure does, i have my blue orb (these things are SO NOISY!) set to 7v using a power adapter i ghetto modded by just swapping the connectors about.

stop saying ghetto :ninja:
will the loss in voltage make any great difference in fan power outage? I mean this thing will be running theatre shows live so needs to be as stable as possible. i.e. it cannot overheat and crash!
is there a better (and quieter way to cool the pc?)
huge bastard heat sinks perhaps... i'm not gonna seriously suggest watercooling as its pretty ridiculous really.
small fans generally make more noise for the amount of air they move, whereas large fan blades move air at lower speeds (therefore lower noise levels).
at 7volts a 120mm fan will still move a helluva lot of air and make little noise - i have an avgs one from tekheads.
what if we rigged some huge heatsink with no fans? what's the best metal? aluminium? copper? how would we attach it? to what is the best thing to attach it to?
i have heard ppl say copper conducts better, but aluminium dissipates better
i will ask an engineery mate tomorrow
wot are u cooling exactly?
the pc! it is rack mounted and there is very little air flow where it will be placed, it will sometimes be on for @ least 12 hours running continuously. Inside is an AMD Duron 800 running Windows 2000 prof ed.
