/me wonders why this thread has gone un-noticed

Well, smoothwall used to be the standard answer to this sort of question, but has since become a bit more commercial.
Still I think there remains a free version - it's a small linux distro that ONLY does firewall, so is suited to a slow PC (486 or so) that you have lying around. You can't do anything else with the machine, it becomes a hardware router/firewall only.

on the subject but not Linux, I use Norton firewall (and anti-virus) and seem to ALWAYS being scanned or ports trying to route out or five million default block sub seven trojans! Now my suspicion is that the firewall ATTRACTS these trojans etc and without it you'd be fine, saying that I am not surfing without it! Tried Zonealarm but got 600 hits in one session and thought too bloody dodgy for me!

good luck!
me too linux useless, any chance of good explanation/ example????

the millions of "trojans" are usually just normal traffic, such as programs that arent configured to access the net within norton trying to get some packets. really, this is sort of a good thing, as it stops spyware type apps. it can be annoying tho when u wonder why something doesnt work (e.g. counterstrike) and almost get to the stage of reinstalling it before realising the firewall is blocking it...
wouldn't that be stupid...

Personally I would use any software firewall as my only defence I would always use a hardware one as well. Tried to get smoothwall working but as I am nat with pipex I couldn't get it to work so I complained about my Alcatel Speedtouch 510 to the company I bought it from and they gave me my money back  for it not being suitable to my needs, absolutely remarkable :)

Then I bought an Intertex IX66 EDFLC
because its the dogs b**(**ks

sure hardware firewalls are the best but if you have to go the software route I would reccomend Mcafee Firewall 4. I use it and it works well,

review of it can be found at :
http://www.icsalabs.com/html/communities/pcfirewalls/cert_prods.shtml

it supports ICS and VPN
demo versions are downloadable as well :P
