I want to build a top spec gaming pc. I'm talking XP, DVD & CD-R,surround sound, flat screen and modem. Price is a bit of an issue but not to much so any advice you can give would be appreciated

Okayyyyy we're looking at an athlon XP setup prolly since ur budget is tight-ish, perhaps an 1800+, and an abit kg7/at7 motherboard. 512Mb ram. 40Gb minimum hard disk.
A Geforce 4 Ti4400 at least, perhaps a 4600. Flat screen... hmmmmmmmm... they aren't all that hot for games, but if you must, a 17" is kinda minimum.
CD-R - a liteon 32x can be had for a sniff over £50 (superb bargain). A DVD drive should set you back about the same.
Surround sound - a soundblaster audigy player should do, and some inspire 5300 speakers. (5.1).
"modem" I don't know. A top gaming PC does not have a dialup connection :p get ADSL or cable.

And since this is top notch stuff, no less than a lian li pc60 or a coolermaster acts-201/210 case to put it all in. £130 unfortunately, but you'll love it I swear.

Software I will leave to you.

I haven't really estimated a price... it should definately come in under a grand, perhaps 800ish?

i wouldn't buy a kg7 mobo unless you want to save a few bucks because you can get a Abit 133 kr7a-raid which has a faster ATA bus and a few better features. The At7 looks interesting too.
