They can't test for falling bits before it takes off..? :wall:

Things break.

Bits always fall off, it's more a question of what was it.

There's ice and crap flying everywhere when they take off, hopefully it's just normal debris... :frown:

Or a burrito carelessly flung from the window.

don't be silly - nobody would ever discard a burrito! you've gotta eat them all!

Surely things not falling off would be a lot more surprising? Like timmeh says *fingercrossed* its just normal debris.

Ah. I invisioned things falling off when it just starts to take off.. which would've been a bit more silly :) Debris I understand..

P.S. Weird, I just had two burritos.. they were mighty tasty

Nasa has said it is grounding the space shuttle fleet as engineers investigate debris which fell from Discovery's external fuel tank during launch.

A spokesman for the US space agency said big chunks of foam broke off the tank after Tuesday's lift-off, but are not thought to have damaged the craft.

eerily similar to Columbia :(

they need to scrap them all and build super new, modern shuttles - not that they'll get the funding mind you!

How could the same thing happen again, when it /never/ used to happen.

I guess the shuttles really are at the end of their lives. I just pray the crew can repair it in space :(

Reading all those articles they seem to be playing it down - they're serious about it but it sounds like it's not a massive problem just that they're very cautious.
Hope so.

Watch the video "astonauts check for shuttle damage" and it seems the damage is within the 'normal' limits i.e. isn't life threatening... they think.

they actually land them?

I thought they just plopped into the sea and swam out!

How do they slow them down?

I watched it at work, pretty amazing incoming pictures. The after landing bit was a bit crap. Just a few headlights in the dark for a while.

How do they slow them down?

By making a couple of s-bends, then bringing the nose up to scrub off lots of speed. After hitting the runway, parachutes are deployed.
