View Full Version : My new room

I mentioned this somewhere else I think, but I've now got my own room and it's a reasonable size. Once my brother's bed goes from it to my sister's house (my brother's new room has a built in bed thing that my dad made) I'll have loads of space. I was toying with the idea of getting a nice 21" CRT monitor to suppliment my 17" LCD so I could run an extended display and mainly watch films on the bigger CRT as (in my opinion anyway) you get a better picture on a CRT. But I've just been to my other sister's new house and she's got a nice wide screen telly, dunno what size, looks bigger than 21 but not as big as 28, for £140. This set me thinking what I should go for... a 2nd hand 21" CRT monitor from eBay at about £70-80 or a 26" (do they exist?) telly for £140. Thoughts...

Also, I still fancy the idea of surround sound...

lcd is more comfortable and easier on the eyes than crt. only reason to use it is because its got a better colour accuracy, 21 crt are hella dated
i see ones on flebay go for 30 quid...
tv are too low res for anything useful tbh..

so to clarify, fuzzeh says "neither, get an uberexpensive LCD instead"

I doubt a CRT is much harder on your eyes from distance than an LCD (certainly not hard enough to be a problem) and it certainly has a better viewing angle, so I'd roll with that. the TV will take up more space etc

TBH, id prolly stick with a decent 19 rather than a 21 (as its likely to be more useful gamewise etc), but whatever

A 19" CRT whont give me any more room than my 17"lcd will it?

I'd say 2" or so
:)

If you get a half decent 19" it should be noticeably larger.

And TV/21"ness will be uberchunky footprint-wise

but then again, you can get some nice new TVs, which are TVs as well as monitors, so that's a plus I suppose :)

viewable area is about the same on a 17" lcd and 19" crt

Nothing wrong with a nice 21" CRT. I've had one for.. gosh many years, before the millennium anyway. However, I personally don't think 21" is enough for "distance viewing". Get a cheap second-hand telly mate, seriously. You get big buggers for pennies.

I know it's the case on paper, but I use both in real life and the 19" CRT looks bigger. Thats all there is to it.

Thats because it is bigger... the screen isn't though :p

Actually a lot of the more expensive 19" CRTs have a viewable of 18" so it depends on how much you spent on your CRT too.

TBH I'd get the TV Beany, if its just for TV/Movies then its far nicer to look at.

I think I'm leaning towards the TV route. For the ammount of times I'd actually want to use an extended display, I don't think it's going to be worth getting a proper monitor.

I got a TV at uni to use as a display for movies, bonus is you can just have TV running in the background while you work on the PC ;)

Okay, so the thing about tv vs monitor hasn't been sorted yet, but now I have turned my atention to something else... the Coolermaster Centurion (http://www.coolermaster-europe.com/index.php?LT=english&Language_s=2&url_place=product&p_serial=RC-532&other_title=+RC-532+Centurion%20532)

My USB ports failed on the front of my case this weekend, and my slot loading DVD ROM hasn't been working for a while, so I decided to take it to bits on Sunday and try to fix it. I wasn't in the best of moods so I decided to take out the fan controler in my case as I was very annoyed with all the cables eminating from it, but discovered it's welded to the chasis. After putting it all back together I put the side back on, and got even more annoyed at the flimsy side pannel which I bent a bit more than it was allready.

The upshot is, one of the connectors on my PSU isn't working, as my temperature screen isn't working now, and my DVD-ROM is, my USB ports still don't work (not a clue why) and I really want rid of this bag of shit case. :wall:
