Get me, so long as the paperwork goes OK then I start work next Thursday working for a medical equipment company setting up and servicing cardiology equipment. It's on a 6 month contract at first as I might have other options later in the year and if I renegotiate my contract I might get more pennies.

Money's only £18k for now but I also get company car, mobile and lappy.

I'll take whatever I can get. The drilling industry took a dip shortly after I finished my course in july and I've gotten fed up looking for a job there (I wasted the better part of 3 months on that)

good luck then dude and let us know how it pans out.

p.s. I hear US military are recruiting.

Actually, maybe I don't want to post that in case you sign up and get sent off to Iraq. Hmm, or I could just post it anyway...

If the danger pay was good, I'd sign up in a second (assumuming a lowly canukastanian can even sign up for the US military without jumping through 1.997*10^19 hoops)

Been working for the last week and a half. Got a VW Passat TDI estate for company wheels which is probably the worst car I have ever driven. It's slow, has a stupid electronic parking brake which is seemingly controlled by Maureen from Driving School, has a really lame trip computer, the indicators have a mind of their own, it tried to run away from me while I was in the services on the M5 tonight and the odometer is so bad that I apparently found a 20 mile shortcut back from Liverpool.

Don't buy one.

I've also got an Inspiron laptop, Nokia 6230i and some other goodies too.

f*ck it, I'm too lazy to make my own thread.
I'm starting tomorrow at some metal fabrication/recycling joint. I know for sure I'm gonna be fiddeling with a cutting torch, but I really hope that I'll be able to learn to weld, which is where the big money is.

It's only 13.50/hr to start, but i'll take as much OT as I can get (which is time and a half). Working 10hrs/day I could make 38k/year (just under £17k).

If I don't learn anything useful, or move up in position and/or few bux in pay after a few months, I'll probably move on to somthing different or go back to school.

Well, the place turned out to be a scrap yard (I got the job through an employment agency, so I didn't know exactly what it was till I arrived this morning). The place is a mismanaged shithole, with virtually no room for advancement and no learing to use the cutting torch or weld. I told them its 50/50 odds that I'll be back tomorrow.

that's a bit shit.

Dude, why not get some sort of comp tech job? That's obviously what you're good at and interested in! (?)

Life isn't all about money and I imagine computer tech jobs pay pretty well if you stick at them. I think money is important but seriously its equally important to do something you're happy doing. I want to make money for security etc. but I want to do something I'm interested in too. You spend the majority of your life at work so you may as well do something you're interested in. I hope to use the ol' noggin to make my fortune in life but learning a manual skill (like you suggest) would be equally awesome - so long as you're fairly excited by it.

I have no post-seconday education, and the only jobs in the computer industry here seem to be systems administrator (not qualified for) and help desk (I won't do help desk, period). I'm going to look into A+ certification, provided I can take the test without going through a course.

Life isn't all about money At this stage in the game, it is. I didn't pursue post secondary becuase I thought there was reasonable cash to make w/o it. My goal this year was to get an overview of various career (be them requireing smarts and/or muscle, I don't care) paths and hopefully make a bit of cash along the way. Needless to say, I've failed all round.
